CANON: Star Wars

HISTORY: rey at the wookiepedia
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?:
The most fundamental thing about Rey is that she's a survivalist. Having been abandoned on a desert planet at an early age, Rey has had to learn how to survive on her own, and she's managed to do so in a mostly successful fashion. Sure her home is a little...shabby, but she eats more regularly than she doesn't, and she's still alive. Rey also manages to hold onto a certain level of empathy for others. It would easy to become purely bitter and cynical in her circumstances, but her first instinct is still to help before anything else, even though it makes her life far more difficult. Her enthusiasm for new experiences is unparalleled, when she allows herself to enjoy the situation, and her limited life experience up until this point means that basically everything is new. She is also deeply loyal, although until recently she hasn't had an opportunity to really demonstrate that. Beyond all that, she's ridiculously determined. Like, "live on the same planet for fifteen-odd years just in case it's where her parents come back to find her" determined.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?:
She's "live on the same planet for fifteen-odd years just in case it's where her parents come back to find her" determined. Really, it's as much a detriment as it is a strength. Rey passes up what could be considered the job of a lifetime because she's so determined to get back to Jakku and so convinced that this is where she needs to be. Given that she lives on an outpost that is frequently passed through, Rey could well have found work and left the planet long before the events of the film, but the single minded conviction that this is where her family will return to keeps her there. This determination has kept her alive all these years, but it also puts up blinders and keeps her from seeing that there might be alternative, maybe better, paths. Unsurprisingly given her upbringing, Rey's social skills aren't exactly stellar. She often comes off as short or abrasive, or just plain rude, and it takes a while for her to actually warm up to people. She's kind of feral, honestly. With the best of intentions, most of the time, but feral nonetheless.
She also sometimes she might beat you up on the advice of a tiny droid. So there's that. It's a mixed bag.
WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?:
Being left on Jakku has without a doubt shaped Rey more than any single event in her life. That moment caused her to become all but self sufficient for the last decade and a half of her life. Not only has this shaped almost her entire personality, but it was the beginning on a course of events that would shape her future, too. Crossing paths with the droid, BB-8, and the ex-stormtrooper Finn also play a huge part, despite them being more recent events. Although getting a rocky start, these relationships are some of the first intense bonds she's created, and despite the fact that it's only been a short amount of time she is already incredibly protective of the people she has grown close to since leaving Jakku.
And then, the last thing she sees before arriving in Idaho. The closest thing she's ever had to a father figure has just been murdered in front of her, by the same person who forced his way into her mind not too long prior to this, and that image isn't about to go away any time soon. Although Rey has lived a hard and often violent life, but it has very rarely been murderous, and never in a way so confronting as in the moment where Han Solo is stabbed only feet away from her. To add to the devastation, the death is caused by the very same person who had kidnapped and extracted information from her in an incredibly violating way.
It's safe to say her feelings on the guy aren't neutral.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?:
Rey's ulitmate goal is to find her family. More than anything this is her one true desire, the all consuming thought in her mind that has even kept her with the same hairstyle. Her desire to be reunited with her parents is what has kept her alive all these years. It translates more broadly into searching for people to fill these roles in her life, and is why she almost imprints on Han and Leia quite quickly after meeting them. Once she chooses her "people" as such, she becomes fiercely protective of them, and when they are harmed - or indeed killed - hell hath no fury.
WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?:
Typically she is quite underestimated. Rey is fairly tall, but scrawny and relatively weak-looking at first sight. When touching a little more of the surface she is easily perceived as rude and brash. She's young and it would also be easy enough to throw naive in with that label, too.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?:
While rude and brash might not necessarily be all that inaccurate, it's not anywhere close to the whole truth. She's capable of deep, intense and loving affection, it's just that she's very guarded with who she hands it off too. She has the ability for great loyalty and kindness, it's just that most people don't get close enough to see. She's had walls up around her since she was a little girl, and it takes some determination to get past them. Also, all weak perceptions aside, she can certainly hold her own.
It's how she's managed this long, after all.
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?:
Depending on the adversity, either remarkably well or by running away. On the one hand, she learned to live with the life she'd been handled remarkably well. While it might not be thriving exactly, Rey has survived in a landscape that many would have died in, and learned how to be largely self-sufficient. She mostly provides for herself, protects herself, and although it's clearly far from ideal it's also a far cry from as bad as it could have been. On the other hand, when confronted with the possibility that there might be something larger in store for her, that her life might hold more meaning than just Jakku, she ran. The idea that she holds this potential is honestly terrifying to her, and were it not for an untimely kidnapping Rey would have run away from her "cosmic destiny" and right back to Jakku without a second's thought. So, still a mixed bag.
WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:
» The memory of being left by her parents on Jakku.
» Meeting Finn at the Niima Outpost.
» The force vision.
» She was a witness to a man being killed via lightsaber to the chest, not including who was doing the killing.
» This man was important to her - though she doesn't remember who he is.
While any memory loss will be a struggle, these are mostly very vital memories to who she is as a person at this current canon point. It's a good start for potential character growth and CR opportunities -- but with enough stuff missing that it'll make it fun, too.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:
SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES:
SCAVENGER
Living and making ends meet as a scavenger means that Rey not only has to be in peak physical condition (gurl can do hella pull ups) but also has had to learn to survive alone too. She speaks a number of languages, including but not limited to Wookie (why) and droid binary. She also has a ridiculously extensive knowledge of vehicles and the parts held within them, seen as this knowledge basically determines how much she gets paid.
PUNCH UPS
On a number of occasions Rey is shown to be able to handle herself in a fight. She typically carries her quarterstaff at all times and is ridiculously adept at kicking ass with it, although she can still hold her own weaponless. She's also seen using a blaster later in the film and is weirdly on target with her aiming. It's probably weird force stuff. Weird force stuff also helps her wave a lightsaber around too, but that's later.
WEIRD FORCE STUFF
At this stage Rey is all raw, unharnessed power. She's definitely force sensitive, probably up there in terms of power (so many midichlorians) but without any kind of training or awareness of this power up until about five minutes ago, what she can actually do is very vague and undetermined. She can resist mind control from another force user, and has been shown to be able to do fancy you will do this Jedi mind tricks, but largely the extent of her control over her power is really unknown at this stage.
WEAKNESSES
Her biggest weakness at this point is her lack of understanding over what her "force sensitive" power actually entails. While we see her tapping into this somewhat when resisting Kylo Ren's mind invasion, Rey doesn't have much knowledge of what it actually means to be a part of the force or what that entails for her. She ran away from one of the few opportunities she could have had to educate herself on this through Maz, and it's not until later in the film that we really see her tap into this and embrace it -- and even then, she still doesn't know what the hell she's doing. It's also important to remember that even though she's shown to be able to hold her own quite well in a brawl-style fight, she's very unrefined. Her skills have largely been honed by the environment that she's grown up in and as a result there's very little actual technique there. She might be tough, she's had to remain in peak physical condition for most of her life to keep up with her line of work, but it's unlikely that she'd fare well in a match up against someone with real training. Although not a physical weakness, her lack of experience could be seen as a huge pitfall. While she's grown up under rough circumstances and learned how to make it work for her, her only knowledge of the world outside of Jakku has come form hand-me-down stories from people passing through the Outpost and naturally should all be taken with a grain of salt. This particular brand of naivety and inexperience could definitely pose a problem for her in adjusting to a new world. Although she'll try to make the best of it as she always has done, time and new experiences are really all that can improve this weakness, particularly given that her people skills are questionable at the best of times.
INVENTORY:
» this outfit
» the quarterstaff in the above picture
» weird ass junk bags ( random spare parts preferably included but they can also be empty it's all about the aesthetic )
» the mask
» either Luke's lightsaber or the blaster given to her by Han. Preferably the lightsaber for ~connections~ and growth related shenanigans but I don't want to push it.
