☆ CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Rey
CANON: Star Wars
AGE: 19
CANON POINT: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, prior to Han Solo's death.
BACKGROUND: Rey at the wookieepedia
PERSONALITY:The first thing to know about Rey, the thing that makes almost everything else about her make sense, is that she has been alone for almost her whole life. Having been abandoned on Jakku at an early age, Rey has had to learn how to survive on her own, and she's managed to do so with varying levels of success. On the one hand she eats, she has a roof over her head, she's alive. On the other hand her only interactions with other people are fighting with other scavengers and occasionally talking to the off-worlders that (mostly) mistakenly end up in the dustbowl. She lives in a fallen Imperial AT-AT and her time is largely spent either studying ships and languages or just sitting alone. Unsurprisingly, her social skills aren't exactly stellar. She often comes off as short or abrasive, or just plain rude, and it takes a while for her to actually warm up to people. She's kind of feral, honestly. But with a heart of gold, of course!
Despite her circumstance though, Rey has managed to maintain an almost childlike fascination with the world. It would be easy for someone in her circumstance to become bitter, cynical and angry, but she hasn't let that happen to her. Her first instinct is still to help someone in need, seen in her first interaction with the droid BB-8. There was no need for her to intervene and possibly risk an altercation with another scavenger to rescue a droid she'd never even seen before, but she does it anyway. While she initially runs after the weird hallucination moment with Luke's lightsaber, seeing Han Solo's death and witnessing the destructive power of the First Order sees her signing up for the Resistance without hesitation and joining the fight. This fight may not have been hers to begin with, but she makes it hers. Rey is also happier than you would expect of someone in her circumstance. Although the events of the movie mean that you don't see it a lot, certainly towards the beginning we see Rey absolutely delight in seeing a new planet covered in forests. She's also absolutely giddy after successfully piloting the Falcon out of a sticky situation on Jakku, and until things get really messed up she can still enjoy the fun moments of an otherwise not-fun trip.
Rey is also ridiculously determined. Like detrimental to herself determined. It's what keeps her on Jakku as long as she stays, what almost sees her running back there despite the opportunity of a lifetime falling into her lap. The single-minded conviction that if she just stayed in Jakku her family would return to her is what kept her trapped on the planet for so long. With the amount of traffic through the outpost Rey almost certainly could have left at any time, she knew herself to be more than adequate as a pilot and had a solid enough understanding of ships to be a mechanic, but she was so determined to find her family in this particular way that it puts blinders on her and keeps her trapped in a pretty terrible position. Without that determination she wouldn't have survived this long, wouldn't have helped BB-8 back to the Resistance, wouldn't have fought Kylo Ren and saved Finn's life, and she damn well wouldn't have gone on some jaunt to find Luke Skywalker, that's for sure.
Ultimately it is Rey's loyalty that defines her. Her loyalty keeps her waiting for a family that has given zero indication of ever returning. That same loyalty sees her fighting for her life to get Finn and BB-8 off of Jakku. It's why her heart breaks watching the man she only met a short while ago die in front of her, why she fights to avenge him. It's why she fights a battle that by all means should have been impossible to win, because it's the only way that Finn had a chance of surviving. ( Also Kylo Ren is kind of a dick, so it's not just sacrificial goodness that fuelled that fight, but still. ) At the end of the day Rey might be difficult to wear down, appearing rough around the edges and abrasive, but it's quick to see that's not even close to all that Rey is. She's got a big heart, she's empathetic and self sacrificing, and if someone can worm their way into her heart, she'll do damn well just about anything to protect them. She's a good ally to have, Rey.
But also sometimes she might beat you up on the advice of a tiny droid. So there's that. It's a mixed bag.
ABILITIES/POWERS:SCAVENGER
Growing up on Jakku meant becoming self-reliant in a number of ways. Living and making ends meet as a scavenger means that Rey not only has to be in peak physical condition (gurl can do hella pull ups) but also has had to learn to survive alone too. She speaks a number of languages, including but not limited to Wookie (why) and droid binary. She also has a ridiculously extensive knowledge of vehicles and the parts held within them, seen as this knowledge basically determines how much she gets paid.
PUNCH UPS
On a number of occasions Rey is shown to be able to handle herself in a fight. She typically carries her quarterstaff at all times and is ridiculously adept at kicking ass with it, although she can still hold her own weaponless. She's also seen using a blaster later in the film and is weirdly on target with her aiming. It's probably weird force stuff. Weird force stuff also helps her wave a lightsaber around too, but that's later.
WEIRD FORCE STUFF
At this stage Rey is all raw, unrefined power. She's definitely force sensitive, probably up there in terms of power (so many midichlorians) but without any kind of training or awareness of this power up until about five minutes ago, what she can actually do is very vague and undetermined. She can resist mind control from another force user, and has been shown to be able to do fancy you will do this Jedi mind tricks, but largely the extent of her control over her power is really unknown at this stage.
INVENTORY:- mask + goggles

LINKED SAMPLES: ONE and TWO
WRITTEN SAMPLE:( there's an incident almost immediately after arrival. rey makes it through most of the physical without incident. sure her expression is a little on the pissed side of neutral, but honestly she's surprisingly compliant for a lot of it. that is, at least until the blood extraction. nothing good ever comes from someone tying to steal your blood, and rey reacts about as pleasantly as anyone could expect. which is to say, she totally freaks out. the poor unfortunate soul who's job it had been to draw the blood immediately cops a fist to the face, and like that rey's trying to escape.
maybe three seconds pass before she's subdued, and the world swims and her vision goes black. well, so much for that.
when she wakes up a few minutes later she's calmed down. the vial was successfully taken while she was out cold, and there's nothing but a faint red mark in the crook of her elbow and a light bruise on the knuckles of her right fist to indicate there ever was an issue. in fact, as it's very patiently explained to her that any further violence will be dealt with in a manner accordingly, the lack of anger coming from the people dealing with her just creeps her out more.. )
What was the blood for?
( rey's demands fall on deaf ears. not because she's being ignored exactly, there are some kind smiles afforded her way -- surprisingly generous, given that she was trying to attack them all only moments ago -- but no one seems exactly willing to give her a direct answer. she makes all of her demands, loud but no longer physical, and is met consistently withe the pleasant but distant non-responses that she's come to know and hate. they're not responsible for being here, these tests are procedure, there will be more information at orientation--
she tries to bolt. in hindsight no one should really be surprised, but rey tries to make a break for it between the arrival bay and the orientation room. it's about as successful as her last little outburst, though this time she doesn't hit anyone at least. instead when she's caught she just grits her teeth and twists her wrists in frustration as she's marched down to the brig. she's only vaguely listening as it's explained to her that this sort of behaviour can't be maintained, that she's being brought to the brig now, but the next incident will be met with more serious consequences. )
How long do I have to stay here?
( it's the only other thing she says, and when she gets her response ( "as long as it takes for you to calm down" ) she just sits on the floor and drags her knees to her chest, forehead dropping down.
what she gets from all of this is that any future escape attempts are going to have to be much, much more carefully planned. so that's exactly what she does.
she starts planning. )
